Child-fishermen in the logone plain : between schooling and traditional fish farming in the “yaeres”
The dynamics of fishing in the "yaérés" and the problem of conventional schooling related to this social environment of the Logone plain remain a permanent challenge for the social sciences and, in particular, the sociology of development and population. This article discusses the relationship between the inadequacy of peasant vocations and the schooling of children in the so-called "yaérés" plain. This discrepancy, which is explained by the submission of the physical environment to ecological phenomena, not only compromises school education but also exposes the populations to forms of circular migration. Such migrations become strategies of social metamorphosis, thus highlighting the schooling of children at school age. To this end, this situation of under-schooling linked to the dynamics of fishing leads us to question its ins and outs. Thus, we used a set of methodological tools that combined theory and practice, which lead to some expected results: the dynamics of fishing in the "yaérés" with socio-cultural, economic, and environmental issues is discrepant to conventional schooling and is a source of school dropout for child fishermen in the Logone plain.
